What you are looking at
A gambrel roof has two slopes on each side: a steep lower slope and a shallower upper slope. It is the classic barn shape, and it gives the second floor more headroom. The new charcoal shingles cover both pitches and the porch wing.
The cottage walls are dark gray-green vertical boards with red windows, red shutters and red-toned gutters. The lake side has a raised deck with lattice skirting and wide stairs down to the yard.
The outbuilding is the eye-catcher. Its hip roof is ribbed steel in a dark green-gray, with ridge caps on every hip and a louvered cupola with a weathervane at the peak.
Steel is a common pick for outbuildings and pole sheds. It sheds snow quickly and holds up on a building that may not be heated.
The photos were taken on a bright late May day with the trees fully leafed out.
The worksheet lists the house roof, the garage roof and a pole barn roof, with a shed roof added on a change order. Steel, shingles and gutters are all listed as trades on the job.
Up close, the cupola has louvered sides and a small metal roof of its own, finished in the same dark color as the steel below it.
The Estate Gray color is the part you see; the part you don't is SureNail, a woven fabric strip across the nailing zone that Owens Corning rates for winds up to 130 mph on four nails per shingle. A loose tab is where meltwater gets in, and a Crosslake winter brings plenty of meltwater to find it.
